Weekly News in a Nutshell - October 25, 2002--Chitra BonamDespite Vajpayee's ill-health, he addressed a NDA rally in New Delhi to mark the completion of three years of its government. He seemed to have addressed the Sangh Parivar and the VHP when he said that everybody needed to work together in coalition politics and that there would be no room for violence. He also said that Pakistan was beginning to emerge as a terrorist state. Differences between the Sangh Parivar and the BJP seemed to be slightly sorted out after a two-and-half-hour meeting held at the Prime Minister's residence on Thursday. Mr Venkaiah Naidu, the BJP President, informed the press that personal attacks on Vajpayee from some of the organizations such as the VHP would cease. On Thursday, the Supreme Court said that Karnataka deliberately did not release Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu and has directed the Karnataka government to release some water. The Tamil Nadu government had filed a contempt case against the Karnataka government about the release of the Cauvery water. The Karnataka police said that additional forces have been deployed in the two sensitive districts of Mandya and Mysore, which come under the Cauvery delta. Though the situation remained peaceful throughout Karnataka, farmers continued their vigil at Krishnaraja Sagar and Kabini reservoirs to ensure that the Government did not release water. According to high-level Bush administration leaks to the New York Times, Pakistan has been colluding with North Korea to mutually benefit their respective nuclear weapons programs. Both countries are in violation of international restraints, but in Pakistan's case, the U.S. has lifted sanctions, while it seeks to impose them on North Korea. However, there is a growing concern about the Pakistan, North Korea association. Law enforcement officials feel confident that they have made two arrests associated with the sniper killings that terrorized the suburbs of Washington since October 2. John Mohammad and Malvo, a stepfather and son duo were arrested in Maryland in the early morning hours of October 24. Polls show that it's difficult to say who will lead in the midterm elections coming up on November 5. Though the Republicans have to fight against accusations of an ailing economy, Democrats too are accused of not being able to present a vital economic policy of their own. That's all for this week.
